    1. Aligning IT Initiatives Back to Business Value

There’s been a good amount of talk in the industry about the importance of “aligning IT to business”, “managing IT based on business priorities”, “monitoring IT infrastructure performance from a business perspective”. I believe this is much more than a trend. And, for IT vendors, aligning IT initiatives back to business value is a fundamental part of collaborating with today’s global enterprises.

For instance, let’s briefly discuss managing SLAs – SLAs inherently link the end user's business process experience with what is happening in the IT organization. In fact, SLAs connect the end user experience directly to the IT organization.

Aternity recently polled its Facebook and Twitter audiences and found that nearly 31% of respondents indicated that reducing SLA penalties is critical for any Application Performance Management (APM) project – the top response -- with more than 38% of the vote --  was around reducing support costs. Therefore, it seems that there is already a strong synergy between business drivers and IT measurements. You can read more about the results of this poll here.

My advice to enterprises truly seeking to align IT to business is to ensure that the APM technologies you work with can fully support the IT objectives while also delivering analytics in a usable form that can be distributed to the business-side and show proper alignment to business goals.

At Aternity, we do this by offering drill down dashboards and on-demand reports that are easily understood and speak to both the IT and business stakeholders in a way that everyone can understand and relate to.
